Pineapple is unusual among Malaysian crops in tolerating genuinely acidic soil, and much of the local crop is grown on peat or acid mineral soils that would struggle to support anything else.
Tolerance is not the same as indifference. The crop has high nitrogen and potassium requirements across a long eighteen to twenty-four month cycle, and heart and root rots become a serious risk wherever drainage is poor.

Eighteen months or more between planting and harvest means nutrition has to be sustained rather than delivered in one or two hits.
Peat soils behave very differently from mineral soils in how they hold and release nutrients, and acidity keeps phosphorus largely locked up.
Poorly drained beds are the main driver of rot losses, and losses tend to appear in patches that expand across a block.

Phosphate-solubilising bacteria are particularly relevant in acid soils where phosphorus binds tightly with iron and aluminium, while organic matter and humic acids improve retention across the long cycle.
