NEXGROW 555 Explained: What an NPK 5-5-5 Organic Compound Does — and Doesn’t — Do

Short answer. NEXGROW 555 is a balanced, low-analysis organic compound: every 50 kg bag carries 2.5 kg each of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O), plus organic matter and trace minerals. Its strength is steady feeding and adding organic matter, which suits nurseries, young plantings, fruit trees and vegetables. It is not an economical way to supply large amounts of nitrogen or potassium, so heavy feeders usually need straight fertilisers alongside it.

What does “5-5-5” mean?

The three numbers on any fertiliser bag are the percentages by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O), always in that order. A 50 kg bag of NEXGROW 555 therefore contains 2.5 kg of N, 2.5 kg of P₂O₅ and 2.5 kg of K₂O. The rest of the bag is the organic fraction — a fermented organic matrix — and trace minerals.

How an organic compound feeds the crop

Nutrients held in organic material have to be broken down by soil microbes before roots can take them up, so they are released gradually rather than all at once. Warm, moist, biologically active soil speeds this up; dry or waterlogged soil slows it down.

The steady release also matters for young roots. Concentrated, highly soluble fertiliser placed close to roots can draw water out of them — what growers call fertiliser burn — and the risk is highest on sandy, low-organic-matter soils in dry spells. Supplying the same nutrients at a lower concentration is one reason growers use low-analysis organic compounds around seedlings and nursery beds. It is not a guarantee: any fertiliser left in a heap against a stem can cause damage.

Where NEXGROW 555 fits

Where it is not the right tool

Heavy nutrient demand. Mature oil palm needs large amounts of potassium. A general guide for palms yielding 18–24 t FFB a year is 1.8–2.5 kg of muriate of potash per palm per year — roughly 1.1–1.5 kg of K₂O. Supplying that from NEXGROW 555 alone would take about 21–30 kg per palm per year. For bulk nutrients, straight fertilisers are more economical: NEXGROW Ammonium Sulphate for nitrogen, NEXGROW Kieserite for magnesium and NEXGROW Rock Phosphate for phosphorus.

Correcting one specific deficiency. If a leaf test shows a single nutrient is short, a straight fertiliser for that nutrient fixes it faster and at lower cost than a balanced compound.

Acid soil. NEXGROW 555 is not a liming material. If soil pH is low, NEXGROW Dolomite addresses that directly.

Comparing value fairly

To compare fertilisers, work out the cost per kilogram of nutrient: divide the price per kilogram of product by the nutrient fraction on the label. For a 5-5-5, the total N + P₂O₅ + K₂O is 15% of the bag, so part of what you pay for is the organic matter. That is good value when your soil needs organic matter and gentle feeding, and poor value if all you need is a large dose of one nutrient.

Rates and ordering

We do not publish one fixed rate for NEXGROW 555, because the right amount depends on the crop, its age, the soil and what else you apply. Send us your crop and age, the area or number of plants, any recent soil or leaf results and your current programme. Our team will recommend a rate and quote. NEXGROW 555 comes in 50 kg bags, and bulk and estate orders are available.
