Short answer. The first three years build the trunk and canopy that carry every future bunch. Young palms need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and boron, in amounts that rise each year. Published guide rates exist (below), but soil type changes them a lot — coastal clays and peat follow different rules — so treat them as a starting point and confirm with a soil test.
Fertiliser in the immature phase builds the canopy the palm will crop from for decades. The SNV and Wageningen smallholder handbook puts it bluntly: if too little fertiliser is applied now, yield will go down two to three years later. Even after the first harvest, young mature palms (four to six years after planting) still need 50–100% more nitrogen than older palms to develop a large, healthy canopy.
The table shows kilograms of fertiliser product per palm per year, as published in the SNV and Wageningen handbook, which is based on Rankine and Fairhurst’s Field Handbook: Oil Palm Series, Vol. 2 – Immature. Choose one product per nutrient — the “or” rows are alternatives, not additions.
| Fertiliser (kg per palm per year) | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrogen — urea | 0.6–1.0 | 1.3–1.7 | 1.3–2.2 |
| or sulphate of ammonium | 1.2–2.0 | 2.6–3.4 | 2.6–4.4 |
| Phosphorus — rock phosphate | 0.9–1.5 | 1.2–1.9 | 1.5–2.2 |
| or triple superphosphate (TSP) | 0.6–1.1 | 0.8–1.3 | 1.0–1.5 |
| Potassium — muriate of potash (MOP) | 0.8–1.3* | 2.5–3.5* | 2.5–3.5 |
| Magnesium — kieserite | 0.7–1.1** | 0.7–1.5** | 0.7–1.5 |
| or dolomite | 1.4–2.1 | 1.4–2.8 | 1.4–2.8 |
| Boron — borax | 0.05 | 0.10 | 0.10 |
* On coastal clays and potassium-rich volcanic soils: 0.5 kg in year 1 and 2.0 kg in year 2. ** No kieserite needed on coastal clay soils in years 1 and 2.
The rates assume standard grades — for example urea at 46% N, sulphate of ammonium at about 21% N and kieserite at about 26% MgO. If your product’s analysis differs, adjust the amount. Check the label: NEXGROW Ammonium Sulphate is N 20.5%, NEXGROW Kieserite is MgO 27% min and NEXGROW Rock Phosphate is 23–30% P₂O₅.
On peat the same handbook gives no magnesium for immature palms, more potassium (1.6, 2.5 and 4.0 kg of MOP per palm in years 1, 2 and 3), rock phosphate as the phosphorus source because it reduces acidity, and small amounts of copper and zinc sulphate. Copper and zinc deficiencies are expected on peat and are very rare on mineral soils.
The handbook’s advice is not to drop the expensive fertilisers, but to prioritise:
NEXGROW Bio-Organic works alongside this programme rather than replacing it: phosphate-solubilising bacteria help release phosphorus already fixed in the soil, and organic matter with humic and fulvic acids helps the soil hold nutrients. Our published oil palm rates are 1 kg per palm every six months in year 1, then 2 kg per palm per year in year 2 and 3 kg in year 3, rising to 5 kg from year 5. The final dose depends on your soil, crop and weather.
NEXGROW 555 is also suited to young immature palms as a balanced organic base, but it is a low-analysis fertiliser: 1 kg supplies 50 g of nitrogen. Matching the year-1 urea rate above (0.6–1.0 kg of urea, about 0.28–0.46 kg of nitrogen) from NEXGROW 555 alone would take roughly 5.5–9 kg per palm. That is why most growers use it with straight fertilisers, not instead of them. We do not publish a fixed NEXGROW 555 rate — send us your palm age, soil and current programme and we will recommend one.
