Soil pH determines whether the nutrients in your soil are chemically available to roots. It is possible to apply a correct, balanced fertiliser programme and still see deficiency symptoms, simply because pH is holding those nutrients in unavailable forms.
High rainfall leaches basic cations — calcium, magnesium, potassium — down and out of the profile over time. Add continuous use of ammonium-based nitrogen fertiliser, which acidifies soil as it nitrifies, and the long-term direction is steadily downward.
Phosphorus binds with iron and aluminium and becomes largely unavailable. Aluminium becomes soluble at concentrations that damage root tips, so root systems stay shallow and stunted. Beneficial microbial activity slows. Calcium and magnesium run short. Each of these compounds the others.
Start with a real soil test rather than a guess — texture, pH, nutrient status and organic matter. Liming corrects pH itself, but rate and material should follow the test result, not habit. Building organic matter is the other half: it buffers pH swings and holds cations that would otherwise leach away.
NEXGROW is formulated at pH 7 to 9 with over 50% organic matter and humic and fulvic acids that raise cation exchange capacity. It is not a liming material, but it directly addresses the organic matter and biological deficit that leaves soil unable to buffer itself.
