These are not competing products doing the same job badly. Urea is a concentrated nitrogen source. NEXGROW is a soil amendment carrying biology. Comparing them on nitrogen content alone tells you almost nothing useful.
Urea is roughly 46% nitrogen — the most concentrated solid nitrogen source in common use, cheap per unit of N, and fast-acting. If a crop needs nitrogen now, urea delivers it.
NEXGROW is not a nitrogen product. It is over 50% organic matter carrying phosphate-solubilising bacteria, more than 20% humic and fulvic acids, and the plant growth hormones IAA and Gibberellic Acid. Its work is on soil structure, nutrient retention and biological availability.
So the honest answer to "which is better" is that most growers need both, and the real question is what proportion — which is what Integrated Plant Nutrient Management is about.
| Factor | Urea | NEXGROW |
|---|---|---|
| What it primarily supplies | Concentrated nitrogen, approximately 46% N | Organic matter (>50%), humic and fulvic acids (>20%), phosphate-solubilising bacteria, IAA and GA growth hormones |
| Speed of response | Fast — available to the plant almost immediately | Slower and cumulative; biological effects build over seasons |
| Effect on soil structure | None | Improves structure; humic and fulvic acids act as chelating agents |
| Effect on nutrient retention | None — highly soluble and prone to leaching and volatilisation | Raises nutrient-holding capacity, reducing loss through leaching |
| Effect on soil biology | None directly; continuous use acidifies soil as it nitrifies | Adds living phosphate-solubilising bacteria to the root zone |
| Phosphorus availability | No effect | Phosphate-solubilising bacteria free up phosphorus bound with iron and aluminium |
| Crop stress resistance | No effect | Supports root health and helps buffer climatic stress |
| Best used for | Correcting an acute nitrogen deficiency quickly | Rebuilding fertility and improving the efficiency of everything else you apply |
| Used together? | Yes — this is the normal approach | Yes — NEXGROW is designed to work alongside a conventional programme |
If you are choosing one, you have framed the question wrongly. Urea corrects nitrogen deficiency; nothing bio-organic does that as fast or as cheaply. NEXGROW improves how much of that urea — and everything else — actually reaches the plant instead of the water table. Most growers start by substituting part of their conventional programme and adjusting as organic matter recovers.
The only comparison that binds is the one from your own soil. We will design a trial against a control block and review the result with you.
Model both programmes with your own figures, including partial substitution.
