Sabah Tawau & Sandakan Oil Palm Guide.

East Sabah’s plantation belt (Tawau, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Kinabatangan) spans fertile volcanic soils and wide alluvial floodplains, under rainfall high enough that leaching is a year-round condition.

  • Volcanic soils: strong natural fertility can mask slow organic matter decline
  • Alluvial and flood-prone blocks: split applications limit leaching
  • NEXGROW adds organic matter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria alongside your programme
  • Shipping to Sabah takes longer — plan lead times

East Sabah soils

Volcanic uplands vs. alluvial floodplains.

Around Tawau and Lahad Datu, oil palm grows on volcanic-derived soils that are fertile by tropical standards, although applied phosphorus can be tied up. Around Sandakan and Kinabatangan, much of the planted area sits on alluvial river plains that are prone to flooding.

Heavy, year-round rainfall means nutrients applied in one large round are exposed to leaching. NEXGROW is a bio-organic fertiliser, processed in line with MS 1517:2012, that adds organic matter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria. The rate for your block is set after a soil test.

Rainfall

East Sabah calendar.

Split, smaller rounds suit continuous rainfall better than single large ones.

Period
Monsoon & Rainfall Status
Agronomic Action
April – June
Post-northeast monsoon drier window
Main NEXGROW round where a drier window exists; a good time for soil sampling.
July – September
Moderate inter-monsoon weather
Second round and leaf sampling.
October – December
Heavy pre-monsoon rains in Sandakan & Kinabatangan
Keep drainage and ground cover in order; avoid large rounds ahead of heavy rain.
Priorities

What we look at in Sabah.

01

Phosphorus availability

Phosphate-solubilising bacteria in NEXGROW help convert bound soil phosphorus into plant-available forms.

02

Leaching

Split applications and soil organic matter help keep nutrients in the root zone.

03

Soil testing first

Fertile volcanic soils still decline under monoculture — a soil test shows where your block stands.

04

Logistics

Shipping to Sabah takes longer. Tell us your location and volume and we will confirm lead time.

Frequently Asked

Sabah planters ask.

How do Tawau soils differ from Sandakan and Kinabatangan soils?+
Tawau and Lahad Datu have volcanic-derived soils that are naturally fertile but can tie up applied phosphorus. Sandakan and Kinabatangan have large alluvial floodplains where flooding and leaching are the main concerns. We test your block and write the programme from the result.
How do I reduce leaching losses in East Sabah?+
Split the programme into smaller rounds, avoid large rounds before heavy rain, keep drainage and ground cover in order, and build soil organic matter.
