Durian rewards good management and punishes neglect. Fruit set, size and flavour all trace back to tree condition and soil health in the months before harvest — not to a single application at flowering.
Two periods matter most. Before flowering, the tree needs reserves built up and a healthy root system. During fruit development, potassium and calcium demand rises sharply, while a shortage of trace elements shows up directly in fruit quality and shelf life.
Durian roots are shallow and sensitive to waterlogging, compaction and root disease. Many orchards fertilise adequately but see poor response because the root system simply cannot take up what is being applied.
Organic matter and humic acids improve soil structure and drainage in the root zone, while phosphate-solubilising bacteria improve phosphorus availability for root development. Better roots mean better uptake of everything else you apply.
Soil-borne pathogens are a persistent threat in durian orchards, particularly in wet, poorly drained soil. Good drainage, clean planting material and early scouting are the first line of defence.
Test your soil before adjusting your programme, and treat drainage and organic matter as part of your nutrition plan rather than separate problems. Our agronomists can assess an orchard block and design a programme around it.
